What is fat grafting?

Fat grafting, or fat transfer, involves suctioning fat from undesirable areas of your body using liposuction and transferring the fat to other parts of your body – such as your buttocks, face, hands, or breasts in women. The benefits of fat grafting include:

  • Correction of folds, dents, and other deep skin wrinkles
  • Increased volume in your cheekbones, cheeks, or chin
  • Rounder buttocks
  • Larger, fuller breasts

A small percentage of the fat injected gets absorbed by your body, but mixing it with your own platelets, as we do at Genesis, can reduce that amount significantly.

The first step in fat grafting is scheduling a complimentary consultation with Dr. O’Dell to determine if you’re a good candidate for the procedure.

You’re first treated with local anesthesia so you don’t feel pain. Dr. O’Dell then suctions fat from certain areas of your body, processes it to remove fluids and mixes it with your own platelets.  He then injects it into other areas of your body at the time of suctioning. Dr. O’Dell places platelet-rich plasma (PRP) from your own blood into the fat prior to transfer to enhance results.

Freezing some of the fat is done and stored for any corrections that may need to be done at a later date. The harvest technique Dr. O’Dell uses separates millions of stem cells from fat tissue, resulting in longer-lasting fat grafts.

He might recommend combining fat grafting with other cosmetic procedures to give you the most desirable, aesthetically pleasing results. The procedure might take about an hour, depending on the areas treated.

After the procedure, you might experience the following temporary side effects:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Tenderness
  • Drainage

Treated areas of your body are swollen immediately after the procedure. Use a cool pack during the first few days to reduce swelling. You might feel comfortable resuming normal daily activities in as little as a couple of days to a week after treatment.

Dr. O’Dell lets you know when to schedule a follow-up appointment in 7 days after the procedure and again after three weeks. He makes corrections as needed to optimize results, as some transplanted fat cells may not survive the transfer.
